Repair Services

About the UTLX Repair Servicing

Union Tank Car and its Canadian subsidiary, Procor, operate an extensive North American network of shops and mobile units to provide the full spectrum of services your railcars require.

Full-service capability

UTLX railcar repair service is available to tank car and hopper car lessees and owners from facilities all across the United States and Canada. With convenient locations, modern equipment and a skilled workforce, this network provides a full range of services, from rebuilding severely wrecked railcars to routine maintenance and required tank and valve testing. And interior coatings and linings can be applied to new or existing cars at several locations.

Certified Work

The major UTLX facilities are AAR approved to perform all types of repair and maintenance, plus x-ray examination and stress relieving of tank welds. Many of these shops also have the flexibility to handle retrofit work and special conversion programs. And all locations maintain an inventory of replacement parts so that your cars can be processed and returned to service quickly.

Dedicated locations

In areas of high fleet concentration, service is often performed by dedicated repair points, or mini-shops. These locations have the capability to test and repair outlet valves, safety valves, pressure fittings and air brakes. They also can repair or replace draft and running gear, handrails and other safety appliances.

Mobile repair units

For light repairs and inspections, a large fleet of mobile repair trucks can bring UTLX service directly to your plant site or siding. Typically, they operate within a 50-mile radius of their base and, on special projects, can make trips of 100 miles or more. Shippers who use this service can substantially reduce "bad order" time and empty mileage charges to and from a shop and thereby improve fleet utilization.

The fleet of mobile units now in operation has a service capability ranging from safety valve testing and bottom outlet reconditioning to minor maintenance, such as replacing broken springs or changing worn brake shoes. Mobile unit crews also have the ability to inspect arriving cars for railroad damage and perform pre-trip mechanical inspections before cars are loaded.

Computerized Car Status Reports

Union Tank Car's computer network provides instant communication between headquarters, district offices and repair shops. The system stores mechanical information on every UTLX car and tracks the progess of shopped cars with up-to-date repair status reports.

Subleasing service

If your shipping activity demands that you supplement your fleet while a car is out-of-service, short-term replacements often are available through our UTIL-I-FAX subleasing service. As an exclusive Union Tank Car service, UTIL-I-FAX provides a reliable source of short-term cars and also a marketplace for shippers who have an excess supply of owned or leased cars.

Interior coatings and linings

Union Tank Car now offers lessees and owners the greatest volume capacity for coating and lining work of any company in North America. For you, that means faster servicing of new car orders and less downtime for re-work of your existing fleet.

Several shops in the U.S. and Canada are fully equipped to apply most types of protective coatings and linings, subject to environmental restrictions. Other locations offer patching and refurbishing service for cars with wear or damage.

Protective materials for over 400 commodities

Choose from the widest range of coating and lining materials available in the industry. In addition to our own line of Lithcote (LC) coatings, Union Tank Car will apply other materials that meet specifications. And if you have a new commodity or a special problem, we'll provide test data for similar commodities or give you coated test rods for your own analysis.

Coating and lining repairs

It's possible that selective repair work can extend the life of your current coating or lining. Before any work is started, our inspectors will provide you with a detailed written report describing the interior condition of your cars. You'll have all the facts you need to make a decision on repairs or replacement, and the confidence that your job will be done correctly, either way.
