As Union Tank Car President Frank Lester prepared for retirement at the end of 2007, he shared a snippet of company accomplishments over the last 27 years. "I’m proud of how far we’ve come, our reputation within the industry, and our many accomplishments, most recently with the Next Generation Railroad Tank Car project."
Please read about how UTLX has been working closely with Dow, Union Pacific and the regulatory agencies to design a safer and more secure tank car.
Union Tank Car's recently formed in-house Research and Development Group has been working on developing “better ways” for our tank car design and manufacturing processes.
The UTLX R&D team comprised of engineers with many years of industry experience is working along side, yet separate from, our product and project engineers who work on day-to-day problem solving.
UTLX creativity and innovation can benefit tank car lessors now and in years to come.
With the objective of returning UTLX railcars to service on an even-more timely basis, Union Tank Car continues to expand and improve its North American network of maintenance and repair capabilities. But with FRA mandated deadlines for tank car qualifications just around the corner, we will only be able to realize these efficiencies with the direct involvement and support of our customers. Through proactive preplanning, the availability of tank cars to meet customer requirements, while at the same time eliminating potential exposure to substantial FRA fines and other economic consequences. In this story you can read about how UTLX is working with its customers to avoid the qualification crunch.
For many years, Union Tank Car has focused on being recognized as the leading information source in our industry. A great example of this initiative is the UTLX Tank Car Seminar, where since 1980 “the tank car people” have educated customers and industry partners alike. It is part of the full-service lease package. If you'd like to be considered for participation in upcoming seminars, reserve a classroom seat through your local UTLX sales office representative. Read about the latest seminar at our new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Alexandria, Louisiana.
LinkNet, UTLX's on-line rail car management resource, has made great strides since Union Tank Car first introduced it nine short years ago. If you are already a LinkNet devotee, I would ask you to continue to tell the "tank car people" how we can make LinkNet even better. And for those of you who have yet to take advantage of LinkNet's capabilities, contact our e-Business Director,

Union Tank Car takes great pride in its extensive railcar knowledge and problem-solving expertise. At the same time as UTLX was facing marketing challenges with the potential obsolescence of one car type, it was also experiencing high demand for another. And, with tank car production capabilities at UTLX's East Chicago, Sheldon and Alexandria plants extended well into 2007, new car construction was not an acceptable option to J.R. Simplot Company. This article expands on how this UTLX lessee was able to quickly meet their near-term needs for additional SPA tank cars by taking advantage of UTLX engineering creativity.
In February, 2006, the Renewable Fuels Association hosted the National Ethanol Conference in Las Vegas. Highlights of the meeting were projected growth in the production of ethanol and plans to transport product to the marketplace. The latter has "fueled" record demand for tank cars and industry backlogs now extend well into next year. Read how UTLX Regional Sales Manager Dave Murawski and his customer service team helped Aventine prepare for growth.
Celaya, Mexico, is the site of UTLX's newest, sourthern-most repair shop. This facililty offers customers full Class “C” service south of the border, and provides the same high quality maintenance and repairs you’ve come to expect from our other US and Canadian facilities. In order to further enhance the safe transportation of hazardous materials by rail, the FRA has mandated inspection and testing requirements for the qualification of tank cars. Although most tank car lessees and owners have a 10-year interval in which to complete the procedure, this represents a major industry challenge.
Read about how UTLX can help you plan for the timely and efficient qualification of your fleet, either in our repair shops or at your plant site.
Union Tank Car prides itself in staying in the forefront of technical advancements and ahead of industry regulations. So it is not a surprise to see UTLX already way ahead of the curve in complying with the new mandate issued this month by the FRA to “reflectorize” rolling stock. This article details how UTLX is adding “conspicuity” decals to its leased hopper cars.
One of the UTLX corporate goals is to be the information source to our industry. Toward that objective, Union Tank Car participates in the education of emergency response workers across the country.
In this article, three UTLX tank cars were refurbished by the Firefighters Education and Training Foundation. These cars joined over two dozen others in a program that has trained more than 5,000 firefighters annually helping keep our communities safer and lessen the risks associated with each call they receive.
Union Tank Car has a history of taking the proactive approach with industry regulatory issues. For instance, UTLX was the first in our industry to apply conspicuity decals on the sides of our cars, long before the AAR required them.
Now, we have been working with customer BP Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) division to replace slip tube gauging devices with magnetic gauges. We feel it’s the right thing to do for our customers’ safety and for the environment.
To find out how your fleet can benefit from an update program, please contact your local UTLX sales office.

Solution:
This major hydrogen peroxide producer required absolute
protection for high-grade tank car shipments, and created
the world's largest rolling Teflon-lined containers.
The list of Union Tank Car
“firsts” reaches back over 100 years. This
Trans-Action magazine article details our recent
industry-leading initiative of “conspicuity” decaling.
This safety measure, also known as “picket fence”
decaling, has helped reduce night times trucking accidents
by over 20%.
That’s good enough for UTLX to migrate that initiative
to the railcar industry.
The FRA has just proposed a rule requiring conspicuity
decaling.
This rule is expected to go into effect within the next
year.
Union Tank Car began applying the conspicuity strips to
some of our new cars in mid-2003, along with reflective
car numbers and ownership marks already part of our
standard procedure.
Why did UTLX lead the industry in adopting this safety
measure before it was required?
Quite simply, we think it’s the right thing to do.
Also, we’ve gained valuable experience that can help
UTLX customers faced with decaling their private
fleets.
We know that’s what you have come to expect from
“The Tank Car People.”
